In January of last year I had this idea to create a meetup which brought people together to try out some of the latests in wearable tech in order to help us all better understand why this new wave of computing is so important. Fast forward to today and We Are Wearables Toronto is now 3,000 strong, making it the largest Wearable Tech group on Meetup.com.
March's WWTO was our biggest one yet which seemed fitting since this group just achieved the status of the world's largest wearable technologies group on Meetup.com. The focus of this event was on identity, payments and privacy. Back again this month to capture all the golden nuggest in a visual format was UX designer and partner at design and development shop, Pixelbot, Jessica Fan. Her sketch notes are a great way to recap the key topics discussed at this event.
Health is wealth -- or, so the saying goes. To take stock in how we take care of ourselves, new technology that we wear has emerged. This wearable technology is equipped with sensors which monitor and track vitals and this information can be used to help us make better decisions in how we take care of ourselves and each other.
The most recent Toronto event held at MaRS on Feb 3 featured a panel discussion on “Wearables for Women” covering topics from design and functionality to the gender mix in the workplace. The discussion was led by freelance writer and multimedia journalist, Amanda Cosco, who writes for publications such as the Globe and Mail and BetaKit.com and included experts from many different spectrums of the technology and design space.
If you are a Globe and Mail reader you may have seen a familiar slogan in the "Next Million" insert provided by KPMG. Author Sarah Barmak adopted our community movement name "We Are Wearables" as the title of her trend piece on wearable technology calling "Canada ground zero for the smart-tech revolution".
Well what do we have here? We Are Wearables Toronto featured in the same segment as a CES fashion show and the official launch of Will.i.am's PULS to illustrate wearables new focus on fashion! Check it out!
The second annual UofT Hacks wrapped up earlier this week in Toronto. The theme of this year's hack was Social Benefit which challenged teams to use tech to for the betterment of mankind and boy did they deliver. The 3-day event saw 500 participants team up and submit 115 hacks using both software and hardware to do some good.
February's We Are Wearables Toronto (WWTO) featured a presentation from the world's first smart earring, Ear-o-Smart followed by a panel conversation on "Wearables for Women". UX Designer and partner at Pixelbot, Jessica Fan, sat in on the event and captured all the golden nuggets in her sketch notes. We've got them here.
Ear-O-Smart connects to your smartphone with Bluetooth, allowing you to monitor a wide range of fitness data. Most importantly, fashion is a fundamental part of the company’s product. I chatted with Ravinder Saini, president of Ear-O-Smart, about the company and his take on the future of wearables and fashion.
Lots of tech too little time. We've put together a slideshow of the wearable tech we saw in Vegas last week.
I got the chance to check out a lot of wearables on and off the showroom floor at CES this year. Needless to say it was sensory overload. But having had some time to let the Vegas dust settle, there are some that really stuck out. From Pet Wearables to Virtual Reality headsets, here are the wearables that topped my "Best of" list from CES 2015.
Another year and another CES 2015 over. It was clear from the amount of devices on the showroom floor that this year is going to be a big year for the wearable category. In fact, CEA, the organization behind CES, dedicated most of the Sands Expo (called Tech West) to showcase over 500 exhibitors of wearable tech. After wading through a sea of connected devices in Vegas this year I saw six major trends which I think will shape the rest of the year for this new wave of computing.
CES has not yet officially begun for the public but the first major press event took place last night at Mandalay Bay, CES Unveiled. The showroom floor was flooded with hardware this year from drones to 3D printers and of course smart things and wearable tech. We've got pictures of the latest wearable tech from CES Unveiled for you to check out.
CES 2015 has officially kicked off with CEA's annual State of the Consumer Tech Industry and CES Trends hosted by CEA Chief Economist Shawn Dubravac. Among the technology expected to shine this year is VR, Smartwatches and Drones.
